Most Anticipated Horror Films For 2009

With 2008 fast coming to a close, a brand spankin fresh and new year of horror is about to be unleashed upon us, and I personally cannot wait. 2008 saw the release of some awesome horror films (which I plan on doing a little piece on soon) and 2009 does not look like it's gonna dissapoint either. From the big box office releases to the small independent shelf dwelling dvd's, here are all the horror films i'm eagerly anticipating once the big ball drops!

'09 looks like it's gonna be a big year for 3D horror, which i'm glad to see making its return, so lets take a look at some of those first. We've got...

Final Destination 4

Cast : Krista Allen, Nick Zano

Plot : After a teen's premonition of a deadly race-car crash helps saves the lives of his peers, Death sets out to collect those who evaded their end.

Release Date : August 21st

Why Am I Looking Forward To It? Good or bad, the Final Destination films always promise to provide one thing ; good gory fun. With the gore now being presented in 3D (or is it 4D?), I think the fun is only gonna get that much funner. I can think of more exciting ways for a shitload of people to die than a race car crash, but it should be awesome to witness nonetheless. I remember reading somewhere that a good 52 people meet their end in this opening crash scene, although I cannot confirm that. If so, this one's gonna be one hell of a ride!

Check out Reelz Channel's behind the scenes feature on the film!

My Bloody Valentine 3D

Cast : Jensen Ackles, Jaime King

Plot : Tom returns to his hometown on the tenth anniversary of the Valentine's night massacre that claimed the lives of 22 people. Instead of a homecoming, however, Tom finds himself suspected of committing the murders, and it seems like his old flame is the only one who will believes he's innocent.

Release Date : January 16th

Why Am I Looking Forward To It? Now this is the way to remake a film and make it a totally new and different experience. Again, the 3D aspect is a huge factor working in favor of this redux and, much like FD4, it looks like a hell of a fun time.

Check Out The Trailer!

Pirahna 3D

Cast : Unknown

Plot : In Lake Havasu, Arizona, a tremor causes the lake's floor to open, setting free scores of prehistoric piranhas.

Release Date : Unknown

Why Am I Looking Forward To This? Even if Mirrors sucked a huge one, Alexandre Aja proved with High Tension and then The Hills Have Eyes that's hes got something to offer us horror fans. Pirahna is a film that could benefit from a remake and 3D is probably the perfect direction for it to go in.

The Dark Country

Cast : Ron Perlman, Thomas Jane (also directed by Jane)

Plot : A couple en route from Las Vegas are forced to deal with a body out in the desert making their honeymoon one hellish ride.

Release Date : March 24th (DVD)

Why Am I Looking Forward To It? I don't really know too much about this one but I like Jane and Perlman and it's in 3D. So count me in!

And now for everything non 3D....

Friday the 13th

Cast : Jared Padalecki, Derek Mears

Plot : A group of young adults discover a boarded up Camp Crystal Lake, where they soon encounter Jason Voorhees and his deadly intentions.

Release Date : February 13th

Why Am I Looking Forward To It? Do ya need to ask? Jason Voorhees back on the big screen and in the hands of the director of the awesome Texas Chainsaw remake? What more could a horror fan ask for? To top it all off, it hits the big screen on Friday the 13th!

Check out the awesome trailer for the film lest you have any doubts!

The Last House On The Left

Cast : Garret Dillahunt, Monica Potter, Sara Paxton

Plot : After kidnapping and butchering two teenagers, a gang unknowingly finds refuge with the parents of one of the victims -- hosts who devise gruesome revenge.

Release Date : March 6th (not official)

Why Am I Looking Forward To It? Sure, my review of the script wasn't so glowing, but Last House is a film that's near and dear to my heart and i'm definetly anxious to see how it'll look on the big screen several decades later. My hopes aren't too high, but i'll no doubt be there opening night.

The Wolf Man

Cast : Benicio Del Toro, Anthony Hopkins

Plot : Lawrence Talbot is lured back to his family estate after his brother vanishes. Reunited with his estranged father, Talbot sets out to find his brother...and discovers a horrifying destiny for himself.

Release Date : April 3rd

Why Am I Looking Forward To It? Quite frankly, I look forward to anything and everything my man Benicio is in and the Wolf Man seems to be the role he was born to play. Del Toro's first film role was in Big Top Pee-Wee, where he played Duke The Dog Faced Boy. See what I mean? The film was penned by Seven scribe Andrew Kevin Walker, if ya needed anymore incentive to get excited.

Saw 6

Cast : Costas Mandylor, Tobin Bell

Plot : Unknown

Release Date : October

Why Am I Looking Forward To It? I don't care what anyone says, I love the Saw films and they consistently entertain me. They've become a permanent fixture in my Halloween season each year and I hope that can keep on being the case for years to come. I'm hoping with this one we see the return of Dr. Gordon.

Tyrannosaurus Rex

Cast : Sheri Moon Zombie

Plot : Unknown. Something about a boxer or wrestler on the run from a biker gang, although Zombie's keeping us in the dark with this one at the moment.

Release Date : August 28th

Why Am I Looking Forward To This? Even if Halloween dissapointed the hell out of me, I still have complete and utter faith in Rob Zombie and what he can do for the horror genre, and I have Devil's Rejects and House of 1000 Corpses to thank for that. This looks like a return for Zombie to material he's more suited to be tackling, and i'm really hoping this one makes me forget all about Halloween.

My Name Is Bruce

Cast : Bruce Campbell...nuff said

Plot : B Movie Legend Bruce Campbell is mistaken for his character Ash from the Evil Dead trilogy and forced to fight a real monster in a small town in Oregon.

Release Date : February 10th (DVD)

Why Am I Looking Forward To This? Coolest plot for a movie ever? This one was made I believe last year and is finally getting a release next year. I've been looking forward to it for a good long while now, and if it provides nothing more than fun and campy Campbell dialogue, I won't be dissapointed.

Check out the trailer!

Drag Me To Hell

Cast : Justin Long, Alison Lohman

Plot : An unsuspecting young woman becomes the recipient of a supernatural curse cast upon her by an older Eastern European woman who was defied and humiliated by others.

Release Date : May 29th

Why Am I Looking Forward To This? Sam Raimi's return to horror! And as a director, not as a producer like with those shitty Ghost House Underground flicks. I'm pullin for ya Sam. Show us why we fell in love with your films in the first place!

Trick 'R Treat

Cast : Brian Cox, Anna Paquin, that fat kid from Bad Santa

Plot : Four interwoven stories that occur on Halloween: An everyday high school principal has a secret life as a serial killer; a college virgin might have just met the one guy for her; a group of teenagers pull a mean prank; a woman who loathes the night has to contend with her holiday-obsessed husband.

Release Date : Unknown

Why Am I Looking Forward To This? I did a whole post on this a couple weeks back, so check that out for all the info and for why I wanna see this movie so bad. There's no guarantee that it'll be out in '09, as it keeps getting the axe, but i'm damn sure hoping we see it sometime next year, be it on dvd or in the theatre.

Check out the trailer!

Eden Lake

Cast : Michael Fassbender, Kelly Reilly

Plot : Refusing to let anything spoil their romantic weekend break, a young couple confront a gang of youths with terrifyingly brutal consequences.

Release Date : January 6th (DVD)

Why Am I Looking Forward To This? I've heard great things about it and the trailer looks awesome, so i'll let that speak for itself....

Midnight Movie

Cast : Rebekah Brandes, Daniel Bonjour

Plot : A midnight showing of an early 1970's horror movie turns to chaos when the Killer from the movie comes out of the film to attack those in the theater.

Release Date : January 6th (DVD)

Why Am I Looking Forward To This? Killer looks lame but it sounds kinda cool. Love the idea of people being killed inside a movie theatre. Sure it's been done before in films like Demons, but it always makes for some good old fashioned fun.

Check out the trailer!

Cast : Shea Whigham, Paulo Costanzo, Jill Wagner

Plot : Trapped in an isolated gas station by a voracious Splinter parasite that transforms its still living victims into deadly hosts, a young couple and an escaped convict must find a way to work together to survive this primal terror.

Release Date : January 27th (DVD)

Why Am I Looking Forward To This? Original horror always gets me excited, and Splinter certaintly doesn't seem to be lacking in that department. If splinters weren't your worst fear already, they probably will be come this January!

Check out the trailer!

The Box

Cast : James Marsden, Cameron Diaz, Frank Langella (Skeletor!)

Plot : A suburban couple with a young child receive a simple wooden box as a gift on their doorstep one day, which bears fatal and irrevocable consequences. A mysterious stranger delivers the message that the box promises to bestow upon its owner $1 million with the press of a button. But, pressing this button will simultaneously cause the death of another human being somewhere in the world; someone they don't know. With just 24 hours to have the box in their possession, Norma and Arthur find themselves in the cross-hairs of a startling moral dilemma and must face the true nature of their humanity.

Release Date : March 20th

Why Am I Looking Forward To This? Richard Kelly directed it and Richard Kelly's the dude who directed Donnie Darko. Need I say more? I remember Eli Roth was originally tapped to direct this film, but I can't say as his replacement is any less suited to get the job done, to say the least.

The Unborn

Cast : Gary Oldman, James Remar, Odette Yustman

Plot : Sometimes the soul of a dead person has been so tainted with evil that it is denied entrance to heaven. It must endlessly wander the borderlands between worlds, desperately searching for a new body to inhabit. And sometimes it actually succeeds.

Release Date : January 9th

Why Am I Looking Forward To This? The dude (David S. Goyer) who helped write Dark City, Batman Begins, and The Dark Knight wrote and directed this one and it stars Gary Oldman, whose perhaps the coolest man alive. Those are the only qualifications I need in order to be sold on a movie.

If anyone's still reading this (I applaud you for sticking around!), i'm also looking forward to Hellraiser, Martyrs, Knowing, Cotton, The Burrowers, Orphan, and Bubba Nosferatu. I don't have any less interest in those flicks, I just can't really bear to type any longer!

Now's your turn to type! What horror films are you looking forward to sinking your teeth into next year?

Well... I guess it's nice to know that someone is optimistic about the future of horror movies. Hopefully 2009 will be better for horror than a dismal 2008. Seriously, I only liked a few movies this year and they were all foreign! I wish Hollywood stopped making remakes and had some original and unique ideas like before... although "My name is Bruce" looks pretty awesome, and I heard a lot of good things about "Martyrs" and "Trick r Treat" so I guess I do have a few things to look forward to!

I agree that 2008 was a bad year for horror, at least as far as studio releases go. But there was a lot of great foreign and indy shit this year and I think that trends gonna be continuing next year. Least that's my hope.

Dude, you listed things I never even heard about! Now I am intrigued.
The 3D movies have me a bit skeptical mostly because 3D turned into a "last resort gimick" for a lot of failing franchises...though I do think Pirahna would benefit from some 3D effects (Fish! Comin right At'cha!).

I'm totally stoked to check out Drag me to Hell. I bounced on my heels at ComicCon when I heard Sam Rami was returning to his roots. SO Stoked to see if he goes back to his raw insane horror style like in Evil Dead (First one is still my fave). I've almost been excited by My Name is Bruce since I heard about it.
Thanks for the Trailers for Splinter and The Unborn. Splinter sounds a bit rediculous on paper but the trailer looks interresting...and Gary Oldman makes anything awesome. I'm also a sucker for evil soul/possession plots.

Im looking forward to 2009 in the hopes that there might be some new original horror movies coming out. I am sick to death of remakes and I want to see some fresh horror with no recycled stories. We can only wait and hope....

All I know is that now that I have seen the trailers for Eden Lake and Splinters, I have two more movies to look forward to this year. Thanks!

Having just watched the trailers for Eden Lake and Splinter, I'd have to thank you for giving me two more movies to look forward to this year. My Name is Bruce looks great too. Now, I'm a huge zombie fan. I'm always looking for the next great zombie flick, so I'm looking forward to Dead Air (starring Bill Moseley).

Splinter is incredible. I was lucky to catch it On Demand from Comcast while it was in the limited run and it has more to do with Carpenter's The Thing than anything else. Not perfect, but one of the best released last year!

So I hear! I think it's coming to DVD soon, can't wait to check it out!

What about Laid To Rest? Any thoughts on that?

Johnny said...

Don't know much about Laid To Rest, but i'll definetly look into it.
