I'm either way out of the loop on this one or not enough people are talking about this movie. I like to think that i'm pretty well tuned into all things extraterrestrial and especially all things extraterrestrial as it pertains to the movies, so i'm thinking it's the latter of the two. What the hell is District 9? It's an upcoming Sci-fi movie that i've become endlessly fascinated by since a friend of mine turned me onto the trailer (which played before Wolverine) a couple days ago and although i've done my research, i'm still not sure exactly what it is. All I know is, I NEED TO SEE IT!
Here's what i've learned thus far, which isn't much ....
First off, you should probably check out the trailer for this flick, which is produced by Peter Jackson and directed by Neill Blomkamp, who in the past has directed a bunch of shorts based on the Halo video games. In so many words, it's about a race of "non-humans" who land in South Africa and become contained to a small slum-like area where they are kept away from the humans, who welcome them with anything but open arms....
And here's that same trailer with handy 'alien to english' subtitles and without the blurred face effect on the alien creature :
Still not sure why the face is blurred in the official trailer or if it's gonna be that way in the movie, but i'm thinking it could just be that way for now to hide the way the aliens look until the release date? Then again, the faces are also blurred out in Blomkamp's original short film, on which D-9 (as it's being called) is based on so maybe that's just the way they're gonna look, to heighten the mystery some more.
Check out that short, titled Alive In Joburg :
And with that, you're about now caught up to speed with my knowledge of the movie!
Is it just me or does this look to be the most interesting take on an "alien invasion" type movie of sorts since the early works of Spielberg? I'm just dying to find out more and that's clearly what the whole viral and vague marketing plan behind this movie is designed to achieve. I'm reminded of Cloverfield and all of the mystery that surrounded that movie, which ended up contributing in a massive way to my enjoyment of said movie. Being that i'm a firm believer that sometimes it's best to not know much at all before heading into the theatre, I cannot wait for this movie-going experience. Forget Star Trek, this is my event of the summer!
For more information and to check out some interesting content related to the world the flick inhabits, head over to the official website and if your interest has been piqued as much as my own, get out to the theatre August 14th and experience District 9 for yourself!
They just want to go home....

This is the first I've heard of this movie. And now I do believe its going to be a new obsession for me.
Thanks so much for pointing this out to me! The trailer didn't play when I went to see Wolverine.
Happy to spread the word! It's truly a shame how so few people seem to know about this movie!
This looks very cool. Since you brought it up I saw Star Trek last night it was very very good. I could go on for awhile but this isnt really the place.
However, there is a scene where Kirk is chased by a large savage Alien and since it was produced by the same company that did Cloverfield, I thought it would have been fun if they used the Cloverfield monster for that scene as an in joke. The alien does have some simularities but definately not in the same family.
I actually do want to see the new Star Trek, despite the fan that I never really watched any of the original shows or movies. It just looks pretty kickass and i've heard nothing but good about it. Feel free to go on about it or anything ya want on here!
District 9 looks very interesting and the trailers and shorts have been great (I love Blomkamp's Halo shorts).
I have high hopes for this movie, but what I know so far deals with a government agent who finds himself infected with an alien virus so he is sympathetic to the aliens while others mistreat them.
Saw the trailer in the theater this weekend and was instantly hooked to check it out. Thanks for posting the unblurred trailer!
