A stinger is a short clip that appears after some or all of the closing credits of a film have run. It is usually either included for humor (where it may be called a "stinger gag") or to set up a possible sequel, as well as to inspire the audience to stay through the credits during the theatrical release.
A few horror films over the years have utilized the power of the stinger and I thought it'd be fun to take a look at some of those. Through my research for this post I stumbled across a site called Movie Stingers, which helped me out a bit, so big thanks goes out to those guys. If you ever want to know if a certain movie has a stinger attached to the tail end of it, head over to MovieStingers.com! And thanks also to Masters of the Universe for giving me my first, and probably best, stinger experience!
Cabin Fever of course ends with that old white bearded dude at the convenience store handing a gun over to his "niggas". Well after the end credits, we're treated to one last line of dialogue from the ghetto backwoods Santa Claus :
Eli Roth also had little stingers tacked on to the ends of Hostel and Hostel Part 2. Both replayed small bits of dialogue heard earlier in the film.
House On Haunted Hill (1999)
Check out some grainy film footage showing the patients of the Vannacutt Psychiatric Institute operating on Steven & Evelyn Price's bodies.
Lost Boys 2 : The Tribe
Those who thought Corey Haim was totally excised from LB 2, fear not! Midway through the end credits, a vampiric Haim appears alongside his fellow Corey!
The little boy who shoots his own head off in Planet Terror was played by Rebel Rodriguez, director Robert Rodriguez' son. Being that he was only 7 at the time, Rodriguez never actually told Rebel that he died in the film. The body shown after the gunshot is heard was a dummy and alternate scenes were filmed where Rebel lives and makes it all the way to the end. These are the scenes that were in the cut that Robert showed to his young son. After the end credits there's a brief shot of Rebel on the beach with his pets, which of course didn't end up in the final film being that Rebel acccidently offs himself in the finished version. Rodriguez says that someday he will have to break the news to his son that not only is Santa not real but that he, Rebel, actually died in Planet Terror too!
Return To House On Haunted Hill
It is discovered in Return, which is actually a fun flick, that a thing called the Baphomet Idol is the source of evil in the titular house on Haunted Hill. If it is taken out of the house, all will go back to normal. At the end of the film, the idol is shoved down a storm drain and flushed out of the house. Where does it end up and who, if anyone, ends up finding it? This end credits sequence explains that as well as provides some added T&A!
See No Evil
This is one of my personal faves. As if Kane's awesome death scene at the end of See No Evil wasn't enough to make ya think that maybe the last hour and a half of your life wasn't a total waste, it gets even worse for the albino pro wrestler! My apologies for the piss (no pun intended) poor quality of this clip. The DVD wouldn't let me pull video from it so I had to bust out the ole camcorder and as you can tell, i'm only a few shakes per minute shy of Michael J. Fox.
You didn't really think the alien creature died off with the implosion of Grant Grant, did ya? Who's next to feel its wrath? Check out this clip to find out!
This is another one that occurs midway through the end credits, showing that the mutants are still very much alive and as evil and ugly as ever!
There is an after the credit sequence from Jeepers Creepers that I was gonna upload but ultimately didn't think it was worth it. It's merely a second long clip of the Creeper's truck zooming past the screen. Pretty sure you can imagine that in your head without the use of visual aids.
If anyone knows of any others that i've missed, leave a comment and let me know!
