Final Thoughts on Elm Street 2010

Now that i've had almost two weeks to really think about the Elm Street remake and let it settle into my brain, I feel the need to speak a few final words on the subject. Truth be told, now that the smoke has fully cleared, I have realized that my initial thoughts on the film were just a tad too lenient. My judgement was admittedly clouded by my love of all things Freddy and because of that, I was perhaps not able to say what I truly felt about the movie - not because I wasn't honest with my review (I am ALWAYS 100% honest with my reviews), but because I didn't really feel so strongly against the movie as I do now that i've put some serious thought into it, not to mention now that i've relived the magic and awesomeness of the franchise and fallen in love with it all over again through Never Sleep Again : The Elm Street Legacy (I promise, it's the last time i'll mention it!). I guess what i'm trying to say is....

The Nightmare on Elm Street remake is a complete and utter piece of shit. It sucks, it's garbage, it's fucking terrible.

There, I said it. And the reason why I said it isn't even so much because of the shitty characters or the bad CGI or even the bad makeup job. It's because of the utter pointlessness of what was put onto the screen.

Platinum Dunes had ENDLESS possibilities to capitalize on the incredible groundwork that was laid down for them with the original franchise by doing something new with that groundwork, expanding on that universe, and telling us a new Freddy tale the likes of which we have never seen before. With the modern technology that wasn't around at the time of those original films, they had the opportunity to bring a mind blowing vision to the screen that would satisfy the hardcore fans and perhaps even convert non-fans of the originals over to our side. But what did they do? They slapped some shitty makeup on "Freddy" and told the same fucking story we've already had told to us before and in fact, even showed us the same exact scenes we already saw well over two decades prior - what the fuck is the point of that? All that endless potential and the best they could come up with was an hour and a half loop of the simple and totally unoriginal formula of character falls asleep, encounters Freddy, gets killed in the same way that character did in the original? If they weren't gonna even bother trying to make things fresh and new and deliver us a new vision of Elm Street, why didn't they just bring back Englund? Better yet, why did they even bother with it at all? FUCKING. POINTLESS.

On pretty much every single level, Elm Street '10 was an epic failure and will go down in horror film history as one of the biggest droppings of the ball ever. I for one cannot tell you how sad it makes me that Freddy got this treatment and I can only hope that those involved with the sequel at least attempt to put the care and love into the film that it deserves. At least fool us into thinking you're doing it for more than monetary reasons, I beg of you. As much as us fans of the original franchise love the stories from those movies and love the scenes and characters in them, we'd rather just go back and watch those movies to get our fix of that stuff. We don't want or need to see Freddy sticking his claws up between Nancy's legs in the bathtub again, we want new iconic images to fall in love with. Is that asking so much? Exercise some goddamn creativity, will ya? It's pretty fuckin' sad when the only cool scenes in a remake are ones that were pulled directly from the original....

I feel much better with that off my chest. I think I need to cool off and go hang out with the Dream Warriors.

Amen...I walked out of the theater going on about everything wrong with this film and the only good thing I found in the film were the end credits and the popcorn I got to buy at the movie theater. Because nothing comes close to theater popcorn.

HERE'S 'HEEPIE'S COMMENT, WHICH WAS ACCIDENTLY POSTED ON THE WRONG POST!

I couldn't agree more with you. I've always been a huge fan of the franchise and it was a really bad disappointment to watch this movie. Disappointment isn't' enough to describe it; it's an insult the fans and everything surrounding the Nightmare on Elm Street movies.

Another thing I was totally shocked is the way the director changed the background story of Freddy. Like if the old story didn't have enough ground. He could just adopt the old and add a few extras or a new layer but not change it completely. And not only that, I was discussed by the way he made Freddy to be a paedophile, he turn such a classic villain into a something I wouldn't like to relate to. You won't see kids dressing as Freddy for Halloween any more after this film. I wouldn't like seeing my daughters dress up of something I would hate to happen to them.

Such a shame, like you said. They could have made so much out of it. The only good part of the CGI was when girl was laying on the supermarket trying to get away from Freddy and as she was coming and going out of micro sleeps you could see the different images of the dream world of Freddy and the real world in the supermarket as all the products falling down the ground with Freddy movement of his hand also changing world, from the dream to the real. This part I thought It was really good and probably seeing the rest of the movie it was a fluke because everything else completely SUCK!!!!

So, you`re secretly in love with Penelope Sudrow as well, i thought you might have been. By the way, i dont care how supposedly bad this "NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET" remake is its still 1000 times better than anything the British film industry has ever produced (or could ever "DREAM" of producing) never forget that alright!!!.

Johnny,
I still think you're being too lenient. This movie wishes it were garbage.
However, those of us who love cinema disasters will be forever grateful to the collective "mirco-nap" that led to this meltdown of a movie. It is so beyond terrible that I kinda love it.

The Pharmacey scene was by far the best part of the whole movie. I already wrote up my thoughts on my blog so I wont repeat here.

Platinum Dunes does these remakes and plays it safe by rehashing what has already been done because it is profitable. Some people treat movies as art, others as business. Platimum Dunes sees these movies as having a built in audiance, like us, that will go no matter what. Therefore they can make what ever movie they want and watch the tickets sales. They done want to spend the time and money on something original (which presents a risk to the bottom line) when you can just use someone else's work.

Sorry man. Know how much you wanted it to be great. Haven't seen it yet, myself. Will wait for the DVD I guess.

I really despised the way that they turned all of the characters into whiny, brooding Emo kids. They looked to be the sort that wouldn't really be all *that* afraid of Freddy, because they probably cut themselves in their free time.

P.S.: Remember when Nancy had a personality? Yeah, those were the good ol' days.

Ya man, Nancy is and always will be one of the best heroines in the history of horror. To see what that character ended up becoming in the remake is truly sad. Long live Langenkamp!

Theres no question that back in `84 Heather Langenkamp was one of the most gorgeous birds of all time.

Amen brother. The only reason this abortion set a box office record is based solely on the pre-existing rabid fans that crave a new installment in the tales of the man of everyone's "Nightmares".Long Live Englund,To Hell With Haley.
