10 Weekly World News Cover Stories That Would Make Great Horror Movies!

Photobucket

Founded in 1979, supermarket tabloid Weekly World News set out to cover the stories the big time papers shied away from, stories too bizarre for mainstream consumption. Right from the get go, they also started reporting on completely off the wall made up stories in an effort to shock supermarket customers into buying their mag, which is how cult characters like Bat Boy came into our lives and hearts. While other publications that covered similar offbeat stories eventually switched over to more mass appeal type news, such as celebrity gossip, Weekly World News always stuck to their guns and never strayed from their wild and whacky format, right up until the end in 2007 (one of the very last issues of the mag took its readers on an exclusive tour inside the Gates of Hell). Still to this day, Weekly World News continues to update the world on the most bizarre stories of the week, both as an insert in Sun magazine and through their website, with plans on someday returning to the printing press.

With nearly three decades of back issues in their archive, Weekly World News serves as an incredible source of inspiration for budding horror filmmakers the world over, who need only look at its many wild cover stories over the years to start the ball rolling on the next great genre flick. If ya don't believe me, check out a mere 10 cover stories I pulled from the archives that I feel would make for some pretty kickass horror movies. I think you'll agree!

Actually the Nazi Moon Dwellers is in the works. It's been trying to get off the ground for a few years now. Check out the trailer, it's pretty freaking sweet!

I'd definitely watch any one of these. Actually, there is a movie called Death Bed: The bed that eats people. See it if you haven't. That's kinda like the eating chair...kinda

You know what's crazy? That whomever owns Weekly World News at this point hasn't tried to sell off the rights to produce some of these concepts!

I know man, I really don't know why they haven't started Weekly World News Films yet. The closest they've come is with this trailer for the Bat Boy Exposed book which recently came out :

I'm sure we'll at least be seeing a Bat Boy movie somewhere down the road!
