THE WALKING DEAD
RISE OF THE GOVERNOR
By Robert Kirkman and Jay Bonansinga
Read by Fred Berman

FIRST CAME THE GROUNDBREAKING AND BESTSELLING COMIC BOOK SERIES…
THEN CAME THE RECORD-BREAKING AMC TELEVISION SHOW…
NOW COMES THE FIRST IN A SERIES OF NOVELS EXPLORING THE ORIGINS OF FAN FAVORITE CHARACTERS FROM THE WALKING DEAD UNIVERSE!

In the Walking Dead universe, there is no greater villain than The Governor. The despot who runs the walled-off town of Woodbury, he has his own sick sense of justice, whether it’s forcing prisoners to battle zombies in an arena for the townspeople’s amusement or chopping off the appendages of those who cross him. The Governor was voted “Villain of the Year” by Wizard magazine the year he debuted, and his story arc was the most controversial in the history of the Walking Dead comic book series.

Now, for the first time, fans of The Walking Dead will discover how The Governor became the man he is, and what drove him to such extremes.

This is the story of Philip Blake, his daughter, Penny, and his brother Brian. Along with two of Philip’s friends, this ragtag group of survivors attempts to make it to Atlanta as the zombie apocalypse rages around them. But as their journey becomes more and more dangerous, Philip will realize that he must do whatever it takes to save his friends and family… and his own soul in the process.

Narrated by four-time winner of the Audiofile Earphone Award Fred Berman, all of your favorite characters in the Walking Dead universe are brought to life along with the fear, adventure, and excitement that the story conveys.

I've been reading the comic for about 5 years, big Robert Kirkman fan all around. Man, what an awesome pilot episode. I think it produced some of the greatest apocalyptic bleakness seen in the zombie genre in quite a while. I was also totally okay with how far it drifted from the story from the comic, mainly because I didn't know everything that was going to happen. I love the show overall, but must say my favorite episode was 4, so much happening in such a short amount of time. I am aching for it to come back on. Great makeup, great acting, writing, directing, all around awesome.

I can't get enough of The Walking Dead. The comic, the show, heck I'm even excited for the after show Talking Dead. For me, the characters really make the story engaging and fun to read. Not to mention having zombies killing off characters left and right isn't shocking and exciting as well. The Govenor's story arc was really a wild ride, so I'm curious to know how they dive deeper into him in the new novel and on the show if they throw him in there down the line.

I love the walking dead comics. I like how it combines a classic horror scenario without focusing too much on the horror. I really enjoy a good story; especially when it is told through horror. Over the past few years the comic has shown how the characters have grown which gives the reader a chance to be along side of them and to engulf themselves in triumph, accomplishments and sorrow.

What made this comic special is that instead of avoiding or falling victim to the cliches from zombie movies, etc... it hits those cliches head on and blows through them. By the time they learn to manage the zombie threat, you're invested in the humans.

I always say the most interesting works in horror comics are done at the extremes:so short that they are a safe place for high concepts or so long that they run far past where most series let off. I can't wait to see what cliche comes next. I hope Carl gets a glass eye.

I love walking dead because it's a brilliant character driven narrative that forces you to genuinely care about the people and plots, without being overly sappy or cliched. Also zombies, gotta love the zombies.

I have a few of the first edition comics but I stopped picking them up. When the show came out I was blown away how good it was. I got the first compilation book set of comics and couldn't wait to see what they do on the show next!! It just got crazier and CRAZIER!! I hope the show keeps up the quality even with all the issues they are having. Love BOTH the show and the comics!!!

I love the graphic novels because they are unpredictable. All of the characters are interesting in their own way. The story is not about the undead but about what it means to be alive and human.

I love the graphic novels. I admit I didn't start reading until about 6 months ago but I flew through all the issues and it is by far my favorite comic book ever. The writing and character interactions are just fascinating.

I love the show too, though it has strayed away from the original storyline, it's good in it's own right. Can't wait for the introduction of Michonne & the governor!

When I was a kid, I was into both comic books and zombie films. Now as an adult, I'm into The Walking Dead. It is a pitch-perfect amalgamation of everything I love about comics and horror. There is a sense of dread in every page turned, enough gore to make even the most jaded horror fan cringe at least a couple of times and there is an element of humanity that is rarely present in even the most well revered zombie films.
