Vintage Video Of The Week : 1973 Audience Reactions To The Exorcist!

When The Exorcist was unleashed upon the movie going masses back in 1973, nothing like it had ever graced the silver screen before. What has been described as "mass hysteria" broke out in theaters across the country, with various reports of patrons fainting, vomiting & having heart attacks while watching little demonic Regan fuck herself with a cross and spin her head 360 degrees around. There was even one report of an alleged miscarriage, a result of the disturbing imagery on display in the film. "There is no way you can sit through that film without receiving some lasting negative or disturbing effects," remarked Chicago psychiatrist Dr Loyis Schlan.

Thankfully, someone had the good sense to document this mass hysteria surrounding the release of the film.

This week, we head back to 1973 to experience what it was like to head out to the theater on opening weekend to see what would soon become one of the most iconic and memorable horror films of all time. This week's Vintage Video Of The Week showcases both the pre-movie lines to get into the theater as well as genuine post-movie reactions from those who paid to see it. Experience the raw power of The Exorcist below, if you dare!!

I love this kind of stuff, getting a look back at movies and things surrounding them from before my time. My dad recalls him and my mom seeing THE EXORCIST shortly after it came out and having heard all the stories. During one scene, he can't remember which, a person ran up the aisle to the lobby. Somebody shouted out "That's one down!" and everybody laughed.
