You ever watch a movie you love for the umpteenth time and you catch a little something something in it that you had never noticed before? Don't ya just love that? Well here are 10 such blink and you miss 'em moments from horror flicks that might have slipped past you!
THE SHINING
After arriving at the Overlook to begin his stay as winter caretaker, Jack is sitting in the hotel lobby reading a magazine. If you freeze frame at just the right moment, you can see that the magazine he is reading is Playgirl, which is of course known for featuring images of naked men. Naturally, given the obsession with deeply analyzing and re-analyzing every aspect of The Shining, it has been speculated that this suggests that Jack is actually gay, some going so far as to entertain the thought that the entire film is a metaphor for his repressed homosexuality. I'm not buying it, but it's interesting nonetheless!
CLOVERFIELD
After the monster attacks the helicopter towards the end of the film, the camera briefly cuts out and the footage distorts. Though you'd never notice it while playing the movie at regular speed, a single frame from the original King Kong is spliced in at this moment, showing Kong swatting a plane out of the sky. Images from Them! and The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms are also similarly spliced into distorted footage, at earlier points in the film. Just one of the many reasons why I love that movie!
INSIDIOUS
James Wan inserts Jigsaw's puppet Billy into every movie he makes, as a fun little easter egg for fans to try and find. Just like in Dead Silence and Death Sentence, Billy pops up in Insidious, drawn on the chalkboard behind Patrick Wilson's character in a classroom scene. A number 8 appears under the drawing, leading many to believe that it's a hint from Wan at an impending eighth installment in the Saw franchise. Only time will tell, but it's likely Wan was just messing with fans!
NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 4 : DREAM MASTER
At the end of the film, when the souls of Freddy's victims rip their way through his body, there's a brief glimpse of a naked female soul, who gratuitously presses her breasts against Freddy's flesh, providing the viewer with an unexpected little peep show. The effect was pulled off by having real actors press into a giant mock up of Freddy's torso, and the woman whose breasts you see is none other than Linnea Quigley, the go to scream queen for 80's on screen nudity!

JASON GOES TO HELL
Cleverly placed in the Voorhees house at the end of the film are two relics from horror films past; the Necronomicon from Evil Dead and the crate from Creepshow, which housed the monster known as Fluffy. Funny enough, these little winks and nods to other films provide pretty much the only reasons to watch the movie!

DAY OF THE DEAD
You've probably watched the scene where Rhodes gets ripped apart by zombies a few hundred times. But did you ever notice that one of the zombies pulls what looks to be a chicken out of his stomach? Romero and Savini joke about this in a DVD commentary for the film, hinting at the fact that Greg Nicotero may have mixed in a rubber chicken with the blood and guts. Though it's never been confirmed, a close inspection of the contents of Rhodes' stomach reveals what sure as hell looks to be some kind of chicken!

JEEPERS CREEPERS
During the scene where The Creeper breaks into the police station, there's a brief glimpse of the back of the monster as a police officer approaches him from behind, while he's feasting on an inmate. The zipper that's holding the rubber monster suit together is clearly visible in this shot, an obviously unintended little goof!

EVIL DEAD 2
After Sam Raimi placed a torn up Hills Have Eyes poster in the fruit cellar in Evil Dead, Wes Craven responded by putting an Evil Dead poster in Glen's room in Nightmare On Elm Street. Raimi kept the love going by hiding Freddy's glove in Evil Dead 2, which is briefly seen above the door when Ash bursts into the work shed after Linda's decapitated head latches onto his hand!

PHANTASM 2
At the crematorium near the end of the film, a mortician is seen emptying the ground up bones and ashes of a recently cremated body into a plastic bag. If you look closely, you can see that the bag he empties the remains into is labeled Sam Raimi, an homage to Evil Dead's creator!

WHAT LIES BENEATH
As the screen fades to black at the very end of the film, after Claire places a rose on Madison's grave, an image begins to take shape in the snow. Though it's hard to make out at regular speed, a freeze frame quite clearly reveals the ghastly image of Madison's face, implying that she is perhaps still not at rest. Talk about creepy!
If you know of any other moments like these, leave a comment and let me know about 'em!

**UPDATE** Thanks to Thomas Griffin for sending me this video, which showcases another little hidden moment from Insidious. Don't watch unless you've got a clean pair of undies handy!!

Damn! I never noticed that moment in Insidious. Makes that movie even creepier.
Fun article. The first one that comes to mind - although it's fairly well known - is the Alien skull in Predator 2.
At the end of "The Innkeepers" before the door slams you can see the face of the girl on the right curtain. She is looking out of the window and then turns just before the slam.
That boobie in Nightmare 4 was fogged out for the making of special in TV. I have always been keenly aware of Miss Quigley's presence.
More Phantasm 2 stuff. I noticed when watching the final credits, the part where it said that any similarity between the characters in the film and real people is only a coincidence and that unlawful copying of the film is prohibited, it goes on to read:
"violators will face severe
civil and criminal penalties and the wrath of the Tall Man."
- Cory
Hah, nice find Cory! Never noticed that before.
This was a great post! I did notice the Saw Puppet in 'Dead Silence' But since I have an intense fear of puppets that whole film watching expeience has been wiped from my brain.
