Vintage Video Of The Week : Spielberg Watches The '76 Oscar Nominations!

Last week was a pretty big week for not only Jaws, but sharks in general.  In addition to it being the annual Shark Week over on the Discovery Channel, Jaws finally made its long awaited Blu-ray debut on Tuesday.  In celebration of all this sharktacular awesomeness, it seems only fitting that this week's Vintage Video come packed with fins and razor sharp teeth!

Tonight, we head way way back to 1976, the night that the Oscar nominations for that year were announced on television.  Many in Hollywood were watching the broadcast with baited breath, including Steven Spielberg, whose hit film Jaws was set to swallow up a handful of nominations.  What must it have been like to be in the room while Spielberg watched those nominations come in?  Well, thankfully for us, somebody actually filmed Spielberg's reactions to the nominations, capturing on video his disappointment over not being nominated for Best Director, even though the film itself was nominated for Best Picture.

See Spielberg's reaction to the epic snub below, in this week's Vintage Video Of The Week!

*Keep an eye out for Maniac star Joe Spinell, who was a friend of Spielberg's.  He first pops up 41 seconds in!!*

Though Jaws did not win Best Picture that year, the film took home music, sound and editing awards.  As for Spielberg, the Best Director snubs would continue for many years.  Though he did get nominations for films like Close Encounters & ET, it wasn't until Schindler's List in 1994 that he received his very first Best Director statue.  Saving Private Ryan in 1999 would mark his second, and only other, Best Director win to date.
