Candy Corn Oreos : The Freddy In Space Taste Test!

Photobucket

My Facebook feed has been absolutely abuzz with excitement the past couple days, the result of a recent announcement that candy corn flavored Oreos will be making their debut this coming Monday, exclusively in Target stores.  The wait has already proven to be agonizing for many, as it has been for me personally in the last 24 hours.  So I decided to head into Target tonight, in the off chance that maybe, just maybe, someone at my local store had put them out a few days early.  It was a long shot, but ya gotta have hope in times like these.

Well folks, I hate to make ya super jealous, but as I arrived at the front register to pay for my cart full of cat food, coffee creamer and various other goodies that were not called candy corn Oreos, there it was.  Right in front of me.  Right by the register.  A sprawling display of, you guessed it, artificially flavored candy corn creme filled Oreos, surrounded by a angelic glow.  OK, so there was no glow, but I could've sworn for a second there that there was.  The situation certainly called for it.

Now I'm not the hugest fan of candy corn, and I almost always find myself unable to eat more than a few pieces before I feel absolutely sick to my stomach.  But what I do love about the little orange, yellow and white faux kernels of corn is what they represent.  Candy corn is quite simply a sugary representation of Halloween itself, Halloween in a bag, if you will, which is why I find myself every October going through at least a couple bags, even though it's far from my favorite candy in the world.  There's just something about candy corn that is incredibly special and near and dear to the hearts of Halloween nuts like myself, which is, I'd imagine, largely why so many people are so excited about these new Oreos.  There's just no way any self respecting Halloween lover could not be won over by that packaging, and the promise of Oreos that taste like candy corn.  I'd like to meet the guy that isn't.  And punch him in the dick.

So then.  Do Candy Corn Oreos live up to the increasingly monumental levels of Halloween fanboy hype they've been garnering across the interwebs?  Let's crack open the bag and find out!

Send ... more ... Candy Corn Oreos!!

At the risk of being a buzzkill here, and dashing the hopes of all those who are beside themselves with excitement about a Monday morning trip to Target, I must report that Candy Corn Oreos were a bit of a disappointment to me personally.  The fact of the matter is that they more or less taste like your average run of the mill Vienna Fingers, those cookies that are essentially vanilla flavored finger shaped versions of Oreo cookies.  Now Vienna Fingers are good, don't get me wrong, but a Vienna Finger doesn't exactly taste like candy corn.  Aside from the festive orange and yellow coloring, I honestly wouldn't have had any idea that these were supposed to be candy corn flavored, if the bag didn't advertise them as being such.  There is a slight hint of candy corn flavoring when you scoop off just the creme and eat it by itself, but all around there's not much difference at all here between these and plain old Golden Oreos (the Oreo version of the aforementioned Vienna Finger).  In a blind taste test, I probably wouldn't be able to find a distinction between the two.

My guess is that the lack of honey on the ingredients list is to blame here.  Most of the quality candy corn out there is made with real honey, which really adds to the sweetness and flavor of the candy.  You may remember that I attempted to make candy corn around Halloween time last year, using a recipe that didn't include honey.  The results were pretty unappetizing.  So yea.  I can only assume that the lack of honey here is at least somewhat responsible for the lack of that distinct candy corn flavoring.  Still proud of Oreo for trying something new here though, and straying from the usual orange creme Halloween cookies.  It's nice to see, even if I prefer those over these.

Regardless of what I just said above though, I encourage you to still go out and grab yourself a bag, as you probably had been planning to do this coming Monday.  The cookies are tasty, even if they don't exactly hit their flavor mark, and the creme color scheme and eye catching bag are enough to warrant a purchase and put a smile on your face, that much I can promise.  So don't listen to me, and don't cancel those Monday plans.  I'd feel horrible if you did.  Don't make me feel horrible.

Next year, I would love to see Oreo tackle a pumpkin creme flavored cookie, which I think would be a whole lot tastier.  Nestled inside a chocolate Oreo cookie, I do believe we'd have a real winner on our hands.  Make it happen, Oreo!

I definitely want to try them, and I like the Golden Oreos so even if they're incredibly mild, I'm good with that. But yeah, I'd be all about some pumpkin creme ones!!

I just bought a bag of these this morning at my local Target. They were on an endcap by the Halloween candy display. I agree with you. They don't taste very candy corn-ish. But, they'll still get eaten. :)

Oh don't get me wrong, the whole box has nearly been consumed already, just wasn't impressed with the flavoring. Still a tasty cookie regardless, as all Oreos are!

Even if they don't taste like candy corn, I will still be purchasing them on looks alone!
