As a lover of any and all things Halloween, I always get excited when television shows decide to celebrate the holiday by having Halloween themed episodes in the month of October, which I prefer to call Halloween Specials. Because, they're more special that way. I decided recently that throughout October I would profile many of those Halloween TV specials here on Freddy In Space, posting full videos of them when possible and of course, sharing my thoughts. But ya know what? I'm excited about the idea of revisiting these specials, so I'm not going to wait until October after all. It's my blog and I'll extend Halloween through September if I want to. Hell, I've already begun doing so, so why not just fully commit to it?!
So then ...
The Freddy In Space Halloween Special feature begins TONIGHT!!
We kick things off in fitting fashion with the first of three Halloween specials from The Real Ghostbusters cartoon, the spinoff animated series which was spawned from the film. Halloween is of course a natural fit with the busters of ghosts, so Halloween themed episodes were rolled out in '86, '87 and '89. When Halloween Was Forever originally aired on November 1st of 1986, as part of Season 1 of the series, and featured the very first appearance of Samhain, who would go on to become a recurring figure in the Ghostbusters universe. Voiced by Bill Martin (one of the writers of Harry and the Hendersons!), Samhain (the Gaelic word for Halloween) was the pumpkin headed spirit of Halloween, whose ultimate goal was to make every day Halloween, with the world cloaked in darkness and ridden with paranormal beasts.
Samhain returned for the '87 Halloween special, titled Halloween 2 1/2, and also made a few cameos throughout the series, as well as appeared in several different forms of Ghostbusters lore, including comic books and the Extreme Ghostbusters series (where he pops up during the opening credits sequence). Samhain has become one of the most iconic and well known Ghostbusters villains of all time, even earning himself a couple action figures, a treatment very few ghostly characters from the franchise have been given. In fact, Slimer was the only other ghost from Extreme Ghostbusters that received his very own toy. And that's saying something, given Samhain never actually even appeared in any episodes!
Tonight, we head back to where it all began, with Samhain's first bid to conquer the world in The Real Ghostbusters. In the episode, Sam's minions release him from his prison in an ancient Irish ruin, and the Ghostbusters are the only thing that stand between him and ultimate Halloween domination. Enjoy the full episode below!!
**FUN FACT : THIS EPISODE WAS THE FIRST IN THE REAL GHOSTBUSTERS SERIES THAT SHOWED THE VIEWER THE INSIDE OF THE GHOST CONTAINMENT UNIT!**
I always love to kick things off in style, so I'm not quite done with this post just yet. Last night, when I decided upon this episode being the first one I'd profile as part of this series, I remembered that my friends over at Monster King Productions recently whipped up an epic mash-up art print, which pit Samhain against another iconic symbol of Halloween, Trick 'r Treat's Sam. It's a print that is part of their ongoing VS series, which features similar mash-ups of similar characters, and is currently selling on the Monster King site for 10 bucks.
I reached out to artist and Monster King owner Stephen Vincent last night, inquiring if he'd be up for supplying one for a tie-in little giveaway with tonight's post, an offer he generously accepted. So let's all say a big thank you to Stephen Vincent, and show our support by checking out his baby, Monster King Productions!
If you want to win the 8.5"x11" Sam VS Samhain print, all you've gotta do is leave me a comment below with your e-mail address along with who you think would win in a fight to the death; Sam or Samhain. Giveaway will run through next Thursday, September 13th. Good luck to all and thanks once again to Stephen Vincent and Monster King Productions!!

Great article, I sure hope Samhain will be in GB3!! rodvegas78@yahoo.com
I think Sam would win! He's crafty and people don't expect him, plus he's just amazing.

Samhain for sure!

I think Sam would win the fight! He's small, able to move around or hide quickly and slice and dice Samhain to the finish!
Sam.

SAMHAIN. He IS Halloween and therefore controls Sam. Besides, it's Ghostbusters.
Great info on GB's... I had no clue. love the print.
Thanks,

I remember watching this when it first Aired also Samhain the goblins would help him Cheat Mattkind69v3@hotmail.com
As an incredibly huge GB fan and lover of Trick 'r Treat I wish I could have this hanging in my house. I'd have to go with little Sam winning this fight. He's tricky and small and would overcome Samhain's crazy world domination plot. Too many villains have huge plans and they always fail.
Well, as much as I love Sam, Samhain is the almighty physical manifestation of Halloween, so he'd probably mop the floor with poor ol' Sam.

Sam all the way!

I gotta go with Sam... hes a crafty little bastard. What I would really want to see is a Ghostbusters vs Sam! wouldn't that be pretty cool?
bundle_of_hiss@yahoo.com
fuck! this is hard, but I go with Sam, I think that after a fight they join forces to rise some Halloween

Samhain hands down.
If Sam is a ghost then he would obey Samhain. If Sam is not a ghost then he wouldn't be able to get through Samhain's ghost-only barriers.

The kids here say Samhain. I think it may have something to do with the fact that they are playing with his action figure though :)

Sam would totally win. Both spirits of Halloween, sure, but Sam just seems to have so much more control over the season. I mean, sure, ghosts are cool and all, but a bus full of zombies? Dude crossed paths with werewolves and didn't flinch. Plus he's not scared to slash some throats when he has to, and yet he's kind enough to do so with such a delicious instrument of torture. That Sam, man, I'm tellin' ya...
Can't answer the question. it's like who would win bruce lee or jet li,or Mike Tyson vs. Muhamid Ali! It's just question that has to many differant answers. Compare this to "How many licks does it take to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop?"THE WORLD WILL NEVER KNOW!!!!!
I think Sam would win, he's a sneaky little guy.

Although the odds may be in Samhain's favor, since he has size on his side, I think Sam would be the victor. He has the agility that could put him over the top.

God, this was one of my favorite episodes besides the Sandman. Man, as a kid, that caused the closet light to be left on.
This sight is an amazing find for me. Thanks for your work, dude!

I have to go with Sam on this one. Trick R' Treat is one of the coolest horror movies to come out in the last few years and I always felt like Sam was the true incarnation of Halloween. Unlike Samhain, he wasn't about total domination or making every day Halloween. He just wanted to make sure yo ass respected it on its day. So, in a fight I think he'd put Samhain in time out.
jasontcarter@gmail.com
Sam definitely wins. That little bugger is tough!
Grindhousehorror@gmail.com Samhain would win. Sam maybe be a cunning supernatural force to be reckoned with but I can only imagine Samhain controls some of the power from which Sam draws his own abilities.
This is by far a personal favorite post. I haven't thought about that episode in years but I loved it. Thank you my friend.
Sam, he's a sneaky little guy.

Samhain FTW

Sam IS Samhain so they are just 2 sides of the same thing so Both win!

Wow, that's a tough call. As crafty as Sam may be Samhain pretty much IS Halloween, but who's to say that Sam wouldn't have a few tricks up his sleeve? ;) I bet Sam could take him though!

Samhain wins, though I love Sam! Samhain IS Halloween but San is more of an enforcer.
jenn_dorris@yahoo.com
Sam is cute. He has to win. ;)
Ssimanowitz@yahoo.com.... Sam would win! He always puts himself back together again after he gets hurt. And he's so gosh darn cute you dont expect him to kill ☺.
SAM WINSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!
-Jason Deadbydawn315@aol.com
Sam would win, hands down. Sam was built for Halloween. Sam IS Halloween. And, he's a quiet, sneaky little dude. Halloween Sam + sneaky, quiet Sam = total devistation. Sam rules. Everything.
