Way back in March of last year, I raved about Joe Dante's latest film The Hole, a fun throwback kids in danger movie that I absolutely loved. Though it was made all the way back in 2009, and released on UK DVD in January of 2011, The Hole has STILL to this day not been given any sort of home video or theatrical release here in the United States, a fact that has for the past couple years baffled me. Despite rave reviews and the fact that the movie was directed by the dude who directed goddamn Gremlins and The Howling, The Hole has somehow slipped through the cracks and remained unopened in the fifty nifty United States for three years now.
That is, until later this month.
The very exciting news has just come down the pipeline that The Hole will FINALLY receive its long awaited DVD/Blu-ray/VOD release on October 2nd, and can be pre-ordered through Amazon right now. Perhaps even more exciting is that the film will be given some sort of limited theatrical release here in the states, beginning on September 28th. I'll let ya know once a theatrical listing surfaces, which should be very soon.
Check out a new theatrical trailer that was cut together to promote the release and then I'll gush more about the movie!
It's been well over a year since I watched The Hole, so my memory of it is admittedly a tad bit fuzzy, but I do remember having a serious dose of nostalgic fun with the movie, which evokes the spirit of a few of my favorite G's on this planet; Gremlins, The Gate and Goosebumps. Nobody really makes these sorts of movies about kids battling evil forces anymore, movies which were perhaps a bit more appreciated and welcomed back in the 80's. Though I said in my original review that I feel The Hole would do incredibly well in theaters, a horror movie that parents and their children could enjoy together, I do expect there to be a lot of hatred hurled towards the movie once it's finally out there for everyone to see. Audiences seem to be less accepting of just plain fun, and perhaps even a bit cheesy, movies like this, and I've got a strong feeling that The Hole would've been a lot more loved had it been released in the 80's, then it will be as a new movie in a far different genre climate. It's the kinda movie that will evoke optimum enjoyment from those who still have a large piece of childhood left in them, which so few unfortunately seem to have these days.
Regardless of what anyone else thinks about it, I absolutely love these kinds of movies and it makes me so happy that Joe Dante has given us another one, after it seemed like family friendly horror was a thing of the distant past. The Hole is one of the most fun times I've had watching a horror movie in recent years, and I can only hope that there are others out there like me who will be able to just sit back with a bucket of popcorn and have a good time with it. This is truly one of those movies that, just like Gremlins, I look forward to someday showing my kid of the future.
Gather the whole family together and enjoy the ride this Halloween season!

Wow. Just wow that this has yet to be released in the States. I believe I watched it on your recommendation when you first mentioned it, along with some fairly good reviews here in the UK.
I urge anyone who has it showing it a local flea pit to go along and catch the movie, it won't change your life but it's a fun movie. 1st half is very strong indeed.
