The Collection : Trailer Thoughts!

Photobucket
Coolest poster of 2012?  I'm thinkin' yes!!

Ya know when you see a movie for the first time and you're not all that into it, but then you re-watch it again sometime down the road and you find that you liked it better than you thought you did?  It happens every so often for me, and The Collector is probably the most recent movie it happened with.  When I originally saw it in the theater, back in 2009, I couldn't get past the fact that it was too much like a Saw film (in fact, it began its life as a Saw prequel), and I was pretty well on the fence as to how I felt about the movie.  And then, when it hit Blu-ray, my friend Jesse bought me the disc for my birthday, and encouraged me to give it another watch.  He was a big fan, and he kinda knew that I was too, but that I just hadn't seen the light yet.  And ya know, he was totally right.  After watching The Collector for a second time, I realized I quite liked it.  So off the fence I came, and onto its bandwagon I went.

So then.  That brings us to The Collection, the upcoming sequel to The Collector, which is set to hit theaters on November 30th of this year.   The trailer just made its way onto the net today, so let's take a gander at it and discuss how we're feeling about the film!

If you're a little foggy as to what exactly is going on here, the basic gist of the sequel is that Arkin, the guy from The Collector, has just escaped the grasps of the man who collected him back in '09.  While he escapes, The Collector collects a young girl named Elena, whose badass dad (played by Chris McDonald!) isn't gonna have none of that shit.  So, he hires a group of equally badass mercenaries to kidnap Arkin, and blackmail him into leading them to The Collector's lair, so that they can remove Elena from the gruesome collection.   Not that all that wasn't pretty clear from the trailer, but yea.

I know this is a fairly typical set up for a horror sequel, as seen in everything from Aliens to Hatchet 2, but I personally am a big fan of the whole idea of the survivor from a first film joining up with a team of badasses for the sequel, to go back into Hell and get serious revenge on the bad guy.  That whole thing just works for me, plain and simple.  So right off the bat, I'm totally sold on The Collection.

Like most horror sequels with an iconic villain, it looks like this one is gonna delve into the whys & hows of The Collector, and give us a little more insight into what exactly his deal is.  While I loved that he was a total mystery in the first film, I'm actually quite looking forward to learning more about him in the sequel.  I'm a big fan of The Collector, the villain, and I feel that if handled properly, he will indeed become a new genre icon, with the franchise he inhabits quite possibly even becoming the new Saw (in that it will go on for a long time, possibly with new installments each year, or every couple years).  Love his old school Giallo inspired look and he's utterly creepy and totally badass, as evidenced by the fact that he bursts into rooms flanked by two big ass dogs and holding a big ass gun.  Fuckin' A.

But if we can talk serious for a moment.  Dude needs a serious Collection Intervention.  He's getting a little out of control here...

One last thing I want to say about the trailer is that the opening dance club massacre scene looks like it has the potential to be a-fucking-mazing, does it not?   That shit better be Ghost Ship gory.  Bring it!!

So yea, I'm totally on board with this one.  How bout you?!

I thought the first was a great premise, but with no hint as to why he was so hellbent on collecting people it deflated a lot.

So here's hoping this one doe sindeed delve a little more.
