Every year, I make a promise to myself that I'm going to wake up early on Thanksgiving and watch the Macy's Parade. And every year, without fail, I sleep right through it. But I'll tell ya what; if I was alive back in 1964, I think I would've made absolutely damn sure I was up bright and early on Thanksgiving day of that year.
Why, you ask? Because in 1964, just over two months after debuting on TV, The Munsters rode in the Macy's Parade. Every year since the parade's inception in 1924, Santa has appeared at the very end of the parade, as a way of ushering in Christmas, and that year, the new on the scene Munsters were given the dubious honor of escorting Santa in the parade, and riding their family 'Roach' through the mean streets of New York City.
Enjoy this week's Vintage Video, a Universal newsreel of The Munsters at the 1964 Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade!
In 1996, The Munsters (albeit a totally different cast) once again crossed paths with Santa, in the film The Munsters' Scary Little Christmas. Last year around this time I made a post spewing my love for that film, so head back and check that out, now that it's once again festive to start talking Christmas. Love that movie.
